United starlet can emulate Wilshere & Sturridge

Manchester United youngster Nick Powell can be as good as Jack Wilshere and Daniel Sturridge, according to Wigan boss Owen Coyle.

The Scot is well positioned to make such a claim, having helped the Arsenal and Liverpool stars enhance their careers during successful loan spells at Bolton.

Now in charge of the Latics, Coyle is set to give Powell an opportunity to impress up-front against Maribor in the Europa League, and he believes the 19-year-old has all the attributes to go all the way.

“I don’t see why he can’t have as successful a career as both of those lads are destined to have. He’s got all the attributes,” the manager told a press conference ahead of tonight’s clash.

Wilshere left the Gunners for a short-term stint under Coyle at the Reebok Stadium back in January 2010, and his performances were highly acclaimed during the five-month spell.

He returned to Arsenal an improved player with some much needed Premier League experience, and was a first-team regular at the Emirates Stadium the following season under Arsene Wenger.

Sturridge joined the Trotters on loan from Chelsea 12 months later, and scored eight goals in just 12 Premier League appearances. He would feature regularly for the Blues the following season.

He’s subsequently joined Liverpool, and his form under Brendan Rodgers at Anfield has made him an automatic selection for England, as well as the Reds.

David Moyes will hope Powell’s spell under Coyle will have the same impact on the player, as the Manchester United youngster looks to recover from an injury that hampered his progress last season.

The Red Devils paid a fee that could rise to £6million to bring the player to Old Trafford during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign, and the club’s new manager will hope to see a return on that fee in the not to distant future.
