What if? - This is undoubtedly one of life's more frequent and ultimately most frustrating queries. 

Pondering such a question is almost unavoidable in many circumstances, particularly in the fast and furious world of sport.

In top-level sport, and football in particular, make-or-break decisions have to be made on an almost daily basis. With so many hirings and firings and signings and sales taking place season after season, it is inevitable that some decisions will have hugely successful consequences while others turn out to be unmitigated disasters.

What if he had signed? What if he had scored? What if they had sacked that manager when they had the chance? 

Here, GMS lists five near misses that, had they come off, would surely have drastically altered the Premier League as we know it today.
