Sir Alex Ferguson sacked
Ferguson certainly enjoyed unprecedented success with the Red Devils before finally retiring from the post following the climax of United's title-winning 2012/13 campaign, but things weren't always so comfortable for the 71-year-old.
Indeed, popular legend has it that the Scot may well have faced the chop if his side had not beaten Nottingham Forest in an FA Cup third-round tie in January 1990. They eventually won the game, however, courtesy of striker Mark Robins.
But just what might have occurred had United lost patience with Ferguson so early? Would they still have enjoyed the same unrivalled success in the subsequent decades?
And one also wonders what would have become of ol' 'Fergie' himself after such a devastating setback. Would he have gone on to cement a defining legacy elsewhere in the Premier League?
