Bayer Leverkusen sub scores last-gasp winner
Jens Hegeler scores 93rd minute free-kick to earn his side Champions League victory
Bayern Leverkusen scored a dramatic injury-time free-kick to defeat Spanish side Real Sociedad, 2-1, in the Champions League last night.
Substitute Jens Hegeler curled a 93rd minute effort into the top corner to condemn the La Liga outfit to their second defeat, and earn his side their first European points of the season.
Sami Hyypia's men took the lead in first-half stoppage time when Simon Rolfes' close-range strike found the bottom corner.
But the Spanish side levelled six minutes after the restart through former Arsenal man Carlos Vela. The Mexican saw his penalty saved by the Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno, but the striker pounced on the rebound to slot the ball home.
The match was set to end in a draw until Hegeler stepped up to superbly place the ball beyond Sociedad keeper Claudio Bravo from the set-piece.
Leverkusen travel to Ukraine next to face Shakhtar Donetsk in Group A - with Sociedad travelling to Old Trafford to face current league leaders Manchester United.
