The Spaniard has endured a tough start to the season, starting just four of Chelsea's 10 games, after Mourinho's decision to drop him in favour of Oscar for the playmaker role.
Mourinho had given him an ultimatum to either amend his game, with many assuming that the Portuguese wants Mata to track back and doing more defensive work, or face being left out of the starting XI.
And Mata has certainly responded to that.
After all, it was thanks to his second-half introduction that Chelsea were able to take something from the Tottenham game.
His creativity and flair has been sorely missed in Chelsea's build up play and their overall performance. Now that he is back amongst the starters, the Blues will be looking to kick-off properly.
It is now up to him to cement a regular starting berth in the team and he knows that he will have to play out of skin if he is to retain it.
"I will try to improve, score goals, assist and do what I have to do. I'm not the kind of man that gets down," said Mata to reporters.
"I just keep going, train well and prepare for every game."
"It's important to play with the ball and without the ball, but I'm very happy and looking forward to playing a lot of games throughout the season."
