The Brazilian, who departed from Formula One in 2011 after an 18-year career, could make an unexpected return as Sauber seek an experienced driver to partner 18-year-old rookie Sergei Sirotkin, who is expected to drive for the team next season.

Barrichello holds the impressive distinction of being Formula One's most experienced ever driver, having started 322 races.

When asked by Sky Sports about the possibility of the veteran joining the team, Monisha Kaltenborn - the team principal - said: "We know what he [Barrichello] has - his experience, we know that he'd like to come back. So let's see."

It would certainly be headline-making to have an 18-year-old and a 41-year-old driving for the same team. Indeed, Sirotkin is easily young enough to be Barrichello's son.

When asked whether Barrichello could make a comeback as early as the Brazilian Grand Prix at the end of the current season, Kaltenborn said: "I don't see any possibility there because we have no reason to change our two drivers for that race."

If Barrichello were to return, he would be echoing the actions of seven time world champion Michael Schumacher, who returned to the sport after four years away aged 41 in 2010.

Schumacher did not enjoy much success on his return, he failed to win a single race and only made the podium once.
