Arsenal and Chelsea have been dealt a potential transfer blow in their pursuit of PSV Eindhoven starlet Zakaria Bakkali.

TalkSPORT claims the 17-year-old Belgian forward is set to be offered a new long-term contract at the Philips Stadium, with the Eredivisie outfit eager to tie the youngster down to the club.

His current deal runs until 2015, but manager Phillip Cocu is hoping to persuade the youngster to put pen to paper on a new offer on his 18th birthday.

The news will be a blow to Arsene Wenger, who was linked with a move for the player during the summer transfer window.

The Gunners have a track record of bringing top young players to the Emirates Stadium, and the teenager was eyed as the next player to add to the list.

However, Arsenal failed to make a deal with PSV for the player, and subsequently looked elsewhere in the window.

Chelsea were also linked with a move, as manager Jose Mourinho looks to make his mark since taking over for a second time at Stamford Bridge.

The Special One inherited a team full of highly-rated young players, with the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne already on the Blues’ books.

Marco Van Ginkel was also added to the Chelsea squad, but Bakkali evaded the club from west London.

And, if the youngster pens a new deal in Holland, then a move to the Premier League would be even more unlikely in 2014.
