The name Valeri Bojinov probably means little to most English football fans, only possibly resonating with Manchester City supporters as he spent an ill-fated two seasons at the club.

During this time, he suffered two long-term injuries, suffering with serious knee ligament and Achilles problems, causing him to only feature 11 times for the blue half of Manchester, scoring just a single goal.

As such, he never adhered himself to the City faithful and never really made an impact upon his return to Italy, rendering him without a club and far from the heroic status of fellow Bulgarians Dimitar Berbatov or Stiliyan Petrov.

This was until a seemingly innocent shopping trip to the Vitosha Park mall in Sofia took a dramatic turn for the Bulgarian. Whilst walking round the precinct, Bojinov became aware of a man in distress, appearing to be suffering a fit.

At this point, the striker stepped up to the situation and began trying to keep the man stable until the paramedics arrived.

BT Yahoo reported that an eye witness described how 'Valeri ran to the scene' and 'was bitten more than once' as he tried to prevent the man swallowing his tongue.

Bojinov himself though denied the seriousness of the incident, and is reported to have said: "Well, apparently I do good things from time to time.”

This dramatic incident though has made him a hero to the Bulgarian public, as he is seen as a lifesaver, stabilising the man who otherwise could have choked on his own tongue and died. It may also go some way to rescuing the Bulgarian’s career, as he is still without a club.

On a light-hearted note, perhaps it is the change of career that Bojinov needs, leaving football to pursue a career in the medical profession, as it has already proved to be a successful pursuit for him.
