The revelation that Arsenal and Chelsea target Saido Berahino is earning £850 a week has sparked anger from his side West Brom, according to the Daily Star.
Berahino has been in sensational form this season and made the headlines last weekend after scoring a fine winner in the Baggies' surprise win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Both Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho have been credited with an interest in the England Under-21 international and both the Gunners and Blues will have been encouraged by the news that he was only on £850-a-week.
Clarke, however, criticised Berahino's agent for leaking the story and accused him of losing sight of what was most important for the young striker at the moment.
"Seeing what came out in the press after the game last week, obviously his agent has been a little bit busy by putting things out in the open," he said.
"I understand that it's an agent's job and that's what he has to do, but now is the time for everyone to be calm and focus on improving Saido as a player."
Clubs like West Brom have a hard enough time as it is in keeping the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea away from their best talents and this will not have made it easier.
Berahino's wages are not exactly a pittance compared to the average person's in Britain, but it is extremely low compared to the average Premier League footballer.
Clarke praised the 20-year-old for his performances and made it clear he wouldn't earning the same for very long if he continued what he was doing at the moment.
"It was a little bit naughty for the agent to put out the level of his wages and what he earns. It's not correct," he added.
"But if Saido continues to do what he's doing, he'll be looked after here. No problem."
