Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert has admitted that he believes Fabian Delph deserves a call-up to the England squad.

Delph has been in decent form this season for Villa and Lambert fully believes the 23-year-old should get a call-up.

Delph arrived at Villa Park from Leeds United in 2009 for a fee of around £6m. Before Lambert actually became manager at Villa Park, Delph struggled to cement his position in the Villa side. He even returned to Leeds in 2012 for a brief loan spell with the club.

Lambert is quoted as saying: "I’d love him to get called up, even if he just got into the squad.

"I want him to get to a World Cup because I know from own experience it’s a great tournament. You might only get one throw of the dice at it, the World Cup. You just don’t know and the opportunity’s there."

There is no doubt here that Lambert has complete faith in his man, which is great to see. Yes, Delph has been in great form this season and he has been recognised for his performance by earning Aston Villa's Player of the Month for August.

However, maybe a call up to the squad may be a step too soon for Delph. Players should get called up based on their performances for club, but there has to be a line drawn somewhere.

If Delph was to be called up, who does England manager Roy Hodgson drop from his team? It is a tough question to ask. Personally, the England team has better options in midfield at the moment than Delph, which is no criticism of Delph really .

Ultimately, if Delph was to keep up his level of performances during the course of the season, it would not be such a ridiculous idea for Hodgson to consider his selection. A good point to make as well, is that Delph is still young and developing. He will continue to get better, so expect him to make the England squad it some point in the not too distant future.
