Brendan Rodgers believes defender Jose Enrique is one of the Premier League's finest in his position.

The 27-year-old made the switch to Merseyside in 2011 when Liverpool paid Newcastle £7million for the Spaniard's services.

Reds boss Rodgers believes the former Newcastle man has continued to improve, and has hailed his defender for impressing despite carrying a knock:

"Jose has been playing with a little bit of an injury, " Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo

"But he's still been showing his determination and pride for the team."

Whilst he may be receiving the backing of his manager, the Spanish defender has come in for criticism for some of his performances this term.

However, Rodgers has backed his under fire full-back, praising his work-rate and talking of his potential as one of the best left-backs in the league:

"The great thing is that Jose is always working at his game. He appraises himself honestly when we have chats. He's one who is looking to improve his game and his passing.

"He has all the attributes to be one of the best left-backs in the Premier League. He's a threat when he goes forward and defensively he's very difficult to beat.

"There's no doubt that on his day he's one of the best in that position in this country."

Enrique will need to prove his manager correct if he's to compete with summer signing Aly Cissokho for the left-back spot.

Liverpool, who sit 2nd in the Premier League table after seven games, face Enrique's former side Newcastle in their next league fixture after the international break.
