With the return of Luis Suarez coming during the time of Daniel Sturridge’s purple patch, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has a tough task fitting the tricky Uruguayan in.
But in the false 9 formation there may be a perfect solution. With a great holding midfielder in Lucas Leiva, two fantastic wingers in Sturridge and Moses, and a perfect false 9 in Suarez, Liverpool could be fantastic with this formation.
The false 9 formation is based around three main aspects…
In Jose Enrique and Glen Johnson they have two full-backs who love to get forward. This would rely on either Steven Gerrard or more likely Lucas dropping back into the centre defence to make it a 3-4-3, with the full-back playing as wingers, and the wingers playing as strikers. This is a really offensive formation when played right.
With this formation comes the need to press high up the park, so the full-backs aren’t left out of position, this shouldn’t be a problem though as Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suarez and Victor Moses are all willing runners.
As there is no out-and-out striker, the wingers must be able to score a goal or two, and both Moses and Sturridge can do just that. And with Luis Suarez playing balls through for them, the two could grab plenty.
So, is this the formation of the future for Liverpool? It certainly could be, but whether or not Rodgers is bold enough to try it is another question.
To conclude, while Liverpool are getting on just fine right now anyway, I believe this formation could take the Anfield club to the top level of European football again.
