The Philadelphia Flyers certainly haven’t been flying high at the start of the season.

And, at 0-3, GM Paul Holmgren made the tough decision to part ways with Head Coach Peter Laviolette. I’m sure many fans are not surprised, and perhaps a little hopeful that this change will turn things around for the Flyers.

In my opinion, it’s not much of a surprise either. I would’ve perhaps waited until at least five games into the season to make the change. But in this situation, the stats tell the story and a 1-5-1 preseason record and a 0-3 start to the season is unacceptable.

This is especially true when considering the squad the Philadelphia Flyers have to work with. With players like Claude Giroux, Wayne Simmons, Scott Hartnell and Vincent Lecavalier, I believe the Flyers have the depth and the time to turn their season around.

I believe Craig Berube has the right game plan in starting to tighten things up in the defensive end first. Even when the Flyers still had Chris Pronger leading the defence, I found the Flyers weren’t good in their own end.

Quite simply assistant captain Kimmo Timonen needs help. He can’t do it all himself and the inconsistency and lack of production from Luke Schenn doesn’t help either. If the Flyers can make some positive changes in the defensive end, they’ll get back to their winning ways.

Also, with the additions of Ray Emery and Chris Mason and the departure of Ilya Bryzgalov, I believe the goaltending will only improve for the Flyers. The bottom line here is that when your team’s GM states that your preseason looked like pond hockey games, as a coach you better pack your bags.

This has been the unfortunate case for Peter Laviolette, and I sure hope he finds another job soon. I can’t wait to see how Head Coach Craig Berube will shake up the line-ups of the Philadelphia Flyers.

In my opinion, he looks like another John Torterella-type coach. And I believe that type of no nonsense style is exactly what the Flyers need to wake up and get out of this slump.
