Kevin De Bruyne was taken to hospital following a training ground injury on international duty.

The Chelsea attacking midfielder will now receive an assessment on what is a suspected ankle injury.

De Bruyne was training with his Belgian team-mates - including club colleague Eden Hazard - ahead of Friday's clash with Croatia.

Should Belgium avoid defeat in Zagreb they will seal their spot in the 2014 World Cup, guaranteeing them top spot in Group A in the process.

Belgium boss Marc Wilmots must be cursing his injury luck as star centre-back Vincent Kompany was ruled out for his side's final two qualifiers less than 24-hours earlier.

Former Werder Bremen loanee De Bruyne appeared to have a starting spot nailed in the Chelsea first-team when he started two of Chelsea's first three games this season following on from an impressive pre-season.

However, the 22-year-old was left out of the squad entirely for the Blues' trip to Norwich City and has come in for criticism from manager Jose Mourinho.
