The absence of Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon was a nightmare for Tottenham fans last season.
However, this season, it's not the same anymore. Spurs have replaced the Real Madrid man with the likes of Erik Lamela and Nacer Chadli, both of them were expected to carry out the wing duties for the north London side.
At present, both of them have to be content with a role in the bench as Andros Townsend and Gylfi Sigurdsson have stepped up their game to make that slots their own.
Since Aaron Lennon's injury, Andros Townsend has started all the Premier League matches on the right hand side, and is one of the consistent performers for Spurs. Big money signing Lamela is waiting on the bench, as the youngster has grown from strength to strength. Even if Lennon returns, it will be difficult to displace the young Englishman who is set to make his international debut in World Cup qualifiers.
Spurs winger Townsend, needed nine different loan spells to establish his name on the big league. It ranges from League 1 clubs to Premier League outfit Queens Park Rangers. His performances at QPR was the turning point in his career. Prior to that he has been seen in various positions including left back, trying to make an impression. Even though QPR went down last season, Townsend stood tall with his dribbling, pace and directness to earn his way into Spurs set up.
Townsend has increased his threat by bringing more unpredictability to his game. He has a devastating left foot which produces thunderous shoots while cutting inside, at the same time he can produce dangerous crosses in byline with his right foot as well. This has added to the worries of opposition defenders including Ashley Cole.
Townsend's dribbling and pace are his biggest assets. While his decision making and tendency to take shots at every opportunity needs to be fine tuned. If he can work on these aspects, the youngster is soon to become a Premier League star and a nightmare for opposition defences.
Gareth Bale's biggest assets were his end products after scorching runs and those long shots. Townsend also posses those attributes which requires some fine tuning. It is not not sure whether Tottenham sold Gareth Bale to unleash new Arjen Robben?
