Manchester United's returning star to act as a new signing

Published 2 Comments

Darren Fletcher has been out of the Manchester United fold for a very long time and, despite making a brief comeback earlier this year, the Scottish international has been heavily missed at Old Trafford.

The midfield star has suffered with chronic bowel disease and it certainly looked at one stage that he would never return to the Theatre of Dreams.

However, after recent reports confirmed Fletcher was back in training, can he now step into David Moyes' side and play a key role for the champions this season?

Some will believe that the energetic midfielder will now be past his best and will struggle to return the player he once was.

But there's certainly a case to put forward that he can still cut it at United.

He's still only 29-years-old, meaning if he had been consistently playing the past couple of years he would only now be reaching his prime.

Whose to say, that if Fletcher does make his way back into the first-team fold, that he can't regain his full fitness.

And, a fully fit Fletcher would certainly be a major boost for Moyes.

United, over the past couple of years, have had troubles in the centre of midfield and the Scottish star could certainly help fill a void.

Alongside the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick, Fletcher would certainly excel as he could provide the legs in-front of the two holding stars.

Before his time out of the game, Fletcher was a key figure in the United side. He played in the biggest games, title deciders, Champions League semi-finals and finals.

He was a cool, experienced head in the dressing room and he's a valuable asset to the champions.

Even a half fit Fletcher will offer more than United's Brazilian player Anderson. He can also help nurture Tom Cleverley, who reminds me of a young Fletcher.

The Scottish international may have never been the headline grabber, but he always did his job immaculately.

Of course, there are no certainties that Fletcher will get back to his best, but if he comes back mentally strong and fit, then he will certainly give Moyes another option.
