The Los Angeles Kings faced the New York Rangers in their first home game of the NHL season on Monday.

This game was extremely entertaining to watch for the neutral fan.

The lacklustre performance from Dustin Brown and Mike Richards and one hilarious, yet costly mistake by Jonathan Quick led to a 3-1 loss.

Quick did make 25 saves last night, but unfortunately all the fans will remember is the goal their superstar goalie let in from the other end of the rink.

I have no idea why Quick attempted to stop the puck by throwing his stick at it. But I do know that as a previous Stanley Cup winner, Jonathan Quick will be able to laugh the mistake off and move on.

However, it still is one of the worst goals I’ve ever seen scored in the NHL. I’m sure it’ll be discussed and shown on every media outlet there is for years to come.

For the New York Rangers, Quick’s gift gives Head Coach Alain Vigneault his first win of the season. More importantly, the win also comes courtesy of two goals from Brad Richards.

Richards has been criticised for his lack of production in recent years. The veteran forward only scored 11 goals last season, and is costing the club a considerable amount of money as well.

So I’m sure Ranger’s fans are hoping that Brad Richards can continue scoring and get closer to the numbers he was tallying when he played for the Dallas Stars.

So it wasn’t the home opener King’s fans were expecting at all. But at least they can take comfort in the fact that the horrendous mistake by their goalie happened early in the season.

I’m sure the LA Kings will bounce back in the next game. I’m also very interested to see what kind of impact those two goals by Brad Richard’s will have on the rest of the Ranger’s season. I hope that Brad Richards will be able to continue scoring and silence the critics this season.
