Paying £20m for a player entering that final year of contract is a bold statement about his playing abilities.
Manchester united did that in 2011 thinking they had signed the next big thing in English football. Ashley Young was making quite a name for himself in Aston Villa colours in the Premier League over the course of the season. Those performances misled Sir Alex Ferguson to loosen his purse strings and spend extravagant money to capture his signature.
Since his move to Old Trafford, though, he has failed to produce the goods. His first season was his most productive one, notching eight goals in 33 appearances across competitions. Since then he hasn't scored a single goal. The big price tag attached to his signature resulted in a number of opportunities, but the outcome was the same.
Young has been failing miserably to step up to the demands of Manchester United. He is just a decent winger for a mid-table Premier League side, not a top winger.
United have tried many players on the wings in recent times and are yet to find out a settled combination which can wreak havoc week in and week out. But they haven't got rid of the inconsistent performers who fail to click time and again. This is preventing them from looking for further options.
Youngster Adnan Januzaj made an impressive debut last week. But he has so many competitors for that spot, including Young, Nani, Antonio Valencia, Shinji Kagawa, Wilfried Zaha, Ryan Giggs etc. Even Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck have been tried out in those positions. One can spot a lot of deadwood in this list and it's important for Moyes to cut short on losses to make way for others.
Top of the list should be Young, who might have dived more times than he successfully dribbled. Young lacks the pace to get past the opponents which is another disadvantage.
Young has been very disappointing in all the outings so far this season, and to protect the best interest of the club and the player, Manchester United should sell him at the earliest.
He doesn't belong at Old Trafford and is becoming a liability with each passing day.
