So far in Italy this season we are witnessing a big surprise.
No one, not even the fans of AS Roma expected that their team would be at the top of the league table win seven wins in seven matches and an emphatic 3-0 against Internazionale at the Stadium Giuseppe Meazza.
All the other teams’ performances have been more or less expected.
Juventus FC and Antonio Conte continue from last season in the same style, and with the addition of Carlos Tevez, are preparing to level up and aim for the Champions League title.
Inter Milan is going through a transitional season with low budget and low expectations as Walter Mazzarri is rebuilding the squad with his view set for the following years.
AC Milan is far away from the standards of previous years and at the same time Massimiliano Allegri has to deal with a lot of injuries, like the one suffered by Kaka, a fact that affects the team a great amount.
Fiorentina struggles to adjust to life post Jovetic era, and SS Lazio have the same team as last year but everyone is one year older and the roster remains small in size for such a demanding season both in Italy and Europe.
SSC Napoli, a giant in the past, are slowly but steadily, waking up.
This season is a year of great expectation for Napoli and I think this is justified.
Napoli signed well known and experienced players like Gonzalo Higuain, Pepe Reina, Raul Albiol and Jose Maria Callejon to overcome the departure of Edinson Cavani to PSG.
All these additions to the existing good squad, alongside the signing of Rafael Benitez as manager, are promising a very competitive team which is currently confirming the expectations.
So with the exception of Napoli and Juventus ,all the other teams in Italy are right now underachieving.
That is the reason why Roma is such a surprise.
All these years we were used to Roma underachieving also, but this year with Rudi Garcia as manager, who gave the squad the much needed calmness, and teach them to play a weird 4-3-3 with Francesco Totti at the top and no clear striker, Roma are performing on the edge.
I think that this team reached its' limits and it is a matter of time to see Roma stumbling to draws and defeats.
The basic reason I think is the small roster and the absence of any striker in the squad.
Totti cannot score throughout the season, and Gervinho and Alessandro Florenzi will not be able to carry the heavy weight of scoring.
To sum up, no I do not think that AS Roma can win the title in this year’s Campionato.
Juventus is once the big favourite - and for me- the only team that could pose a possible threat to Juventus is Napoli.
