Jack Wilshere, who yesterday expressed his somewhat controversial views on who he thinks should be allowed to play for England, has come under fire from cricketer Kevin Pietersen on Twitter.
Wilshere told the press ahead of England's clash with Montenegro: “Only English people should play for England. Just because you live here for five years doesn’t make you English. We have to remember what we are”
Wilshere’s definition of what constitutes a foreigner was always going to be controversial and has sparked a debate on Twitter.
Wilshere’s comments came in relation Adnan Januzaj’s possible eligibility to play for England if he stayed in the country until 2018. Because of the Balkan break up in the early 1990s, and Januzaj’s subsequent relocation, he could be available to represent a number of countries at international level, including England, Belgium, Croatia, Serbia, Albania and Kosovo.
South-African born Pietersen responded to Wilshere’s comments by posting on Twitter:
“@JackWilshere -interested to know how you define foreigner...? Would that include me, Strauss, Trott, Prior, Justin Rose, Froome, Mo Farah?'"
To which Wilshere replied: "@KP24 With all due respect Mr Pietersen the question was about Football! Cricket, cycling, Athletics is not my field!"
Pietersen quickly replied: "@JackWilshere same difference.. It's about representing your country! IN ANY SPORT!"
Wilshere responded again, adding: "@KP24 I agree that's exactly what I was saying.”
Wilshere’s last response seemed to suggest that he was back-tracking over his earlier comments about what it means to be foreign. It remains to be seen whether Wilshere’s comments will land him in hot water.
