Before we evaluate the Premier League big-hitters supposedly chasing Pirlo, let us first deal with the biggest perceived foreign threat in the race for his signature (other than Juventus themselves, of course).

Real Madrid, with their formidable and somewhat cringeworthy history of lavishing astronomical sums of cash on a succession of high-profile signings, could be a very attractive destination for Pirlo.

Although Real are currently blessed with a number of talented central midfielders - including Spanish star Isco and former Spurs man Luka Modric - Pirlo would surely still command an instant starting berth if he were to switch to the Bernabeu.

Do they need him?

Real are always on the lookout for the next potential 'Galactico' to add to their ranks and break fierce rivals Barcelona's dominance and what they do or do not need is rarely relevant during their transfer pursuits.
