Jose Mourinho's second coming at Stamford Bridge has been somewhat disappointing. While many predicted he would be instantly able to work his considerable magic and propel Chelsea back into permanent fixtures in the title race, the opening few months of the Portuguese's latest stint in West London have been notably difficult.

While they have improved their league form slightly of late, Chelsea have been far from their best thus far this season. In midfield, Brazilian Ramires generally partners Frank Lampard with a trio of attacking talents frequently playing in behind the lone striker.

Do they need him?

With a glut of options in attacking midfield, fans might suggest that Chelsea require a more sturdy defensive presence. Although Pirlo is a deep-lying midfielder, he does not offer much in the way of defensive rigidity.

And in Lampard, it could be argued that Mourinho already has one talented midfield star slowly edging towards the end of his career.
