Mesut Ozil | Turkey to Germany

Mesut Ozil was born and raised in Germany but, as his last name suggests, his decedents hail from Turkey.

When it was becoming clear that Ozil was a special talent, Turkish fans retained a hope that he would choose to play for the country of his grandparents.

But he eventually chose to be part of the German national set-up instead.

That wasn't the end of the story however, as after scoring against Turkey in an international match, Ozil was quoted as saying by "My family and I will always be Turkish.

"I didn't want a match in Euro 2012 qualification with Turkey. My will is for both teams to feature in the finals."

A consolation for Turkish fans, maybe?
