Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso could be in line for a sensational return to Liverpool.
The Daily Star reports that a deal for the Spanish midfielder could be done in January, after it emerged that he is unlikely to sign a new deal with Real Madrid when his contract expires at the end of this season.
It appears that Madrid are already preparing to replace him, with rumours of a swoop for Chelsea midfielder Ramires.
The Spanish giants are keen for a deal to be done in January, so they can cash in on him, rather than letting him go for a free next summer.
Liverpool sold Alonso to Madrid back in 2009 for a fee of £30million, and the Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers looks ready to move for the midfielder.
The 31-year-old signed for Liverpool in 2004 from Real Sociedad, and was one of the first players to arrive at Anfield under the then manager Rafael Benitez.
It was a debut season to remember for Alonso, winning the Champions League on that famous night in Istanbul. He also won the FA Cup a year later, when Liverpool beat West Ham on penalties.
The Spanish international has also been linked with a move to Chelsea. He is currently out of action with a broken metatarsal.
