As Sir Bobby Charlton celebrates his 76th birthday, the GiveMeSport office decided it was a perfect opportunity to select the five biggest legends in Manchester United history.

Any list of this nature is of course going to cause controversy among supporters, and with only five of the very best selected, plenty of Red Devils fans’ favourites are sure to miss out.

When pulling together the list of Manchester United’s five biggest ‘legends’, it was important to take into account a number of key factors – appearances, status with fans, goals, success etc.

However, it’s the subjective nature of such a selection that makes it so debatable.

And, we’d like to invite readers to add their top five at the bottom of the article, so if you think a must-have has been harshly left out, let us know.

Sir Alex Ferguson would be the club's legendary manager, although even that's debatable given the role Sir Matt Busby played in putting Old Trafford on the map in European football.

That's another debate, however, and so without further ado we'll get into it. Let the Manchester United debate begin...
