Sheffield United have parted company with David Weir after a mere 13 games at the helm of the club.

He has endured a torrid time since taking over from Danny Wilson in the summer, winning just twice during his tenure. The Blades lie 22nd in League One, already sitting 14 points away from the play-offs, despite having been listed as one of the favourites for promotion at the beginning of the season.

The side invested heavily in the summer, bringing in the likes of Florent Cuvelier, Harry Bunn, Jose Baxter and Marlon King; however, his side have mustered only six goals in ten league games.

It is believed the tipping point was his side's loss to Hartlepool in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy during the week.

Chief executive Julian Winter, said: "First and foremost all at Sheffield United, from the board right the way through the club, wish David and Lee all the best for the future.

"None of us wanted to be in this position at this point in the season. David's appointment was made as part of developing a new phase at the club."

The former Everton Reserves coach was interviewed for the post at Goodison Park following David Moyes' departure, and was highly regarded by the staff at Everton before he was offered the job at Bramall Lane.

He made a successful start to his spell, winning 2-1 against Notts County, but has failed to record a league win since.

Weir's departure leaves United seeking their ninth manager in six-and-a-half years. It is believed former club captain Chris Morgan will take charge of the side on a caretaker basis.
