Monaco's billionaire owner Dmitry Rybolovlev is set to bank roll a £42m bid for Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala, reports the Sunday Express.

Both Chelsea and Manchester City were linked with a move for the defender in the summer whilst the Express also report that Manchester United were planning a bid as part of an £80m January spending spree.

According to the Daily Mirror, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho attempted to bring the 22-year-old to Stamford Bridge in the summer but failed to agree a deal with his former club Porto.

The Guardian report that David Moyes sees Mangala as the perfect long-term replacement for Rio Ferdinand at the heart of Manchester United's defence.

Ferdinand, 34, and Nemanja Vidic, 32, are both in the latter stages of their careers at Old Trafford and Moyes wanted Mangala to start the replacement process.

However, reports in Portugal say that any club wanting to sign the French international will have to stump up the full value of the player's release clause, believed to be £42m.

And it seems Ligue 1 outfit Monaco are the only club ready to offer the full amount to secure Mangala's signature ahead of the Premier League trio.

The move will be the third time in a year that Monaco have raided the Portuguese champions after signing James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho in the summer for a combined £60m fee.
