Former Arsenal star Robert Pires says Arsene Wenger has the money at his disposal to make Arsenal title challengers again.

After spending £42.5million on German star Mesut Ozil on transfer deadline day this summer, Arsenal have shown they have the financial firepower to deal at the top level of the transfer market.

The signing of Ozil has lifted the Arsenal dressing room, with many Arsenal players praising the influence of the German on their recent run of good results. Since signing Ozil, Arsenal have lost none, drawing just once in the Premier League.

Robert Pires has stated his desire for Wenger to reaffirm Arsenal's position at the top of the Premier League by making big signings in January and beyond.

He told the Daily Mirror: “If you look at all the successful clubs who won titles and trophies, they always buy after they have been successful.

“There is no question that Arsenal are at a high level at this moment. They are playing to the kind of football played during my time at the club. And Ozil – well, he is world-class.

“But their appears to be a new financial philosophy at Arsenal now. Arsene can spend money, more than he has been able to do before and I believe he should add to the squad when he can.”

Arsenal have been under financial restrictions since their multi-million pound move to the Emirates Stadium from Highbury, and are only now starting to move away from their rigid wage structure.

The Gunners' next Premier League game sees them host Norwich City, who lost 3-1 to Chelsea at Carrow Road last weekend. The Gunners will hope to cement their position at the top of the Barclays Premier League table with a convincing win on Saturday.
