Manchester City have joined the race to sign Barcelona's defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano, according to Le 10 Sport.
The French newspaper reports that Manuel Pellegrini is keen on the Argentina international, who previously played in the Premier League with Liverpool, and a January move is on the cards.
It's unclear whether Mascherano wants to leave the Camp Nou, but the tenacious midfielder has featured regularly for the Catalan giants since his compatriot Gerardo Martino was appointed as Tito Vilanova's successor.
Mascherano joined Barcelona in 2010 in a €24m deal from Liverpool and has gone on to win multiple trophies, including two La Liga titles, one Champions League title and one FIFA Club World Cup.
As well as a touch-tackling midfielder, Mascherano has also proved himself to be a capable centre-back during his spell in Spain, where Pellegrini saw the Argentine at closer quarters while managing Malaga.
