Tottenham winger Andros Townsend was lauded on Friday for his debut performance in England's crucial qualifier against Montenegro.
Townsend repaid Hodgson's faith by scoring England's third goal which subsequently killed Montenegro's chances of a comeback.
The 22-year-old winger was called up to the Three Lions national team after impressing for Tottenham.
He fully deserved his call up as he has stepped up to the plate since Gareth Bale's summer departure to Real Madrid.
However Townsend, who has been at Tottenham since the age of nine, has had to work hard to win a place in the north London's side first team.
Townsend had been shipped out on loan nine times between March 2009 and May 2013 - with his best displays coming last season while he was on loan at Queens Park Rangers.
His rise to the top has prompted GMS to take a look at five other Premier League stars who have got where they are today due to a loan spell at a 'smaller' club.
