Leighton Baines, who is statistically one of the best left-backs in world football at the moment, was high on the agenda of Manchester United over the summer, but the Red Devils came unstuck as Everton rejected the advances of their former manager.
There have been a few seasons of debate as to whether Baines or Ashley Cole should be first choice for England however, on current form, Baines is head-and-shoulders above Cole who has had a bit of a dip in form recently with Chelsea.
Cole is injured for the final World Cup qualifier against Poland as he was for Friday's crunch match against Montenegro. Baines started then and looked accomplished in an England shirt as he has done for seasons at Everton.
And, he is fully expected to start again on Tuesday at Wembley. It's about time the Everton left-back was given a good run in the national side.
The choice between Baines and Cole is an interesting one and it all depends what you want from your left-back.
Defensively Cole would probably be the one you choose, that is not to say Baines is poor defensively, but it's more the case the Cole reads the defensive side of the game well.
Baines however is exceptional at going forward and putting his side on the front foot, last season Baines notched up eight goals and nine assists for Everton and England in 52 games -an incredible stat for a left-back.
He has also started this season well, assisting once and scoring three times in just the 13 games he has played, It is tough to see anyone else at left-back especially in the World Cup next summer providing qualification is achieved.
Ashley Cole on the other hand will be 33-years-old next summer, compared to Baines who will be 29 - an ideal age some might say.
Cole who has struggled to regain his form from a couple of seasons ago, he has not been in the best shape this season and if Baines does become England's No.1 it would be on merit and a change from a player being picked on form and not on club reputation.
