Wayne Rooney eager to clinch spot in Brazil

Wayne Rooney is hopeful a 'brilliant atmosphere' at Wembley on Tuesday night will encourage England to clinch the three points that will secure their place at the World Cup in Brazil next summer.

Victory against Poland will be enough for England to claim a spot at the 2014 tournament, and Rooney believes the fans will play a key role in pushing Roy Hodgson's side over the line.

Rooney posted on his official Facebook page: "Massive game tomorrow! Should be a brilliant atmosphere at Wembley, hopefully with another big performance and the England fans behind us again we can secure our place in Brazil!"

England were tasked with winning their final two matches of qualification to be certain of a World Cup berth, and Rooney played a prominent role in ensuring the first of the encounters resulted in victory.

The Manchester United striker scored the opening goal against Montenegro last Friday to put England on their way, with the match ending 4-1 to the home side.

After Rooney had converted shortly after half-time, Branko Boskovic turned into his own net before Dejan Damjanovic halved the scoreline to set up a potentially tense finale.

But a fine strike from Tottenham debutant Andros Townsend restored England's two-goal advantage, before Daniel Sturridge scored from the penalty spot in the final minute.
