Real Madrid duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema could be set for an World Cup play-off battle.
The chances of the two superstars' countries meeting for a crucial match to decide their World Cup fate is very real.
Both France and Portugal look set to miss out on automatic qualification to next summer's finals in Brazil and will have to settle for second-place in their respective groups and the play-off match that comes with it.
In the past, it would be an unthinkable scenario that these two giants of international football would miss out on a spot at the premier world competition, but, due to untaken chances and poor performances, it is now a reality.
France have slipped to 25th place in the FIFA World Rankings - meaning that a seeding for the play-offs is looking unachievable.
This would mean Benzema's France would face one of the four higher-ranked teams and this would include Ronaldo's Portugal.
If the teams were to be paired together, it would mean a host of the Premier League's best footballers could miss out on the chance to showcase their talents at the 2014 World Cup.
Manchester City duo Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy would be joined by Newcastle United trio Yohan Cabaye, Moussa Sissoko and Mathieu Debuchy in having to watch on from the television screen.
Arsenal's Oliver Giroud and Mathieu Flamini would also miss out alongside Manchester United's Patrice Evra if France failed to win the tie.
A lot has been said about the FIFA world rankings and they way in which the points are calculated.
The current top ten is made up from Spain, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Columbia, Belgium, Uruguay, Brazil, Holland and Croatia. Portugal sit in 11th with England 17th.
It is still possible that France could face England - with neither country wishing for that to happen no doubt.
The last round of qualification fixtures take place tonight as the race for the World Cup draws to an end.
