And when the chance to play Manchester United's development team came up, you could excuse the optimism of many Birmingham fans.
Birmingham coach Steve Watson oversaw the 3-1 victory of David Moyes' development side, with Darren Ambrose, Matt Green and then Demarai Gray scoring the goals for the Blues.
It was a momentous moment for young Gray who turned two United players in his own half, drove towards the United box before playing a one-two and slotting cooly home.
