Barcelona rumours rubbished by Pepe Reina

Pepe Reina has hit back in anger over reports that could could move to Barcelona next summer.

The Liverpool goalkeeper was loaned out to Napoli for the season following the acquisition of Simon Mignolet at Anfield.

Reina is believed to be surplus to Brendan Rodgers' plans with the Ulsterman admitting in the summer that he was available on a permanent transfer but no offer came in.

With Victor Valdes set to leave the Nou Camp next summer when his contract with Barcelona expires, naturally Spaniard Reina has been linked with the vacant role.

The 31-year-old came through the famous La Masia academy at Barcelona and made 30 appearances for the Blaugrana before moving to Villarreal.

But Reina says that no contact has been made and he is still very much a Liverpool player.

"It is an invention of newspapers,” he told Spanish radio station Cope.

“Even last year it was said that I would take over from Valdes.

“It is normal that a player dreams of representing a club like Barcelona or Real Madrid because they are historic and prestigious teams.

“But I have a contract with Liverpool until 2016. I do not care about the rumours.

“I am excited to be at Napoli and try and win something here.”

Despite Reina's reluctance to be flattered by the rumours, a number of Barcelona's stars have given their backing of the La Liga champions pursuit of the 'keeper.

Andres Iniesta recently told reporters: "Reina? We would be delighted if he were to join Barca."

Pedro is also quoted by Marca as saying: "We’d be thrilled to welcome Pepe into the team because we already know him. He’d settle very quickly."
