Michael Owen to Manchester United - 2009

Sir Alex Ferguson signed Owen in the summer of 2009 on a free transfer in hope that the former Liverpool star would help to replace the goals scored by Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

United had chased the then Lyon striker Karim Benzema - but lost out on his signature to La Liga giants Real Madrid.

Owen scored nine goals in 31 appearances during his first season at Old Trafford - with his strike against Manchester City being his best moment in a United shirt.

The striker went on to spend two more seasons at Old Trafford before being told to find a new side after his last injury-plagued campaign at United.

Owen went on to spend a season at Stoke City before announcing his retirement from the game at the age of 33.

Red Devils fans will remember Owen for his last-minute goal against City but he did not have the quality to replace the likes of Tevez and Ronaldo.
