Bayer Leverkusen surprised everyone, including themselves, by finishing third in the Bundesliga last season. Under the joint leadership of Sami Hyypia and Sascha Lewandowski. After the season ended Lewandoswki left, leaving the former Liverpool defender to manage the team alone.
The summer transfer window saw the German club lose a starlet in André Schürrle, who moved to English club Chelsea. Many regarded this to mean that Leverkusen would decline back to its mid-table state. But, presently, the Bundesliga club sits third in the table, one point behind leaders Bayern Munich and level on points with Borussia Dortmund.
While football is a team game and the entire team has to be credited with playing well, there is one player who has outshone every other player, not only in the club, but also in the entire league. Yes, we are talking about 25-year-old attacking midfielder, Sidney Sam.
The attacking player was in and out of the BayArena outfit’s team last season, but has made his presence felt this season and has been omnipresent. Leverkusen pose a threatening attacking trio for any club in the world which also involves Sam, last season's league top scorer Stefan Kießling and summer signing from Hamburg, Heung Min Son.
Sam, who is an attacking midfielder but can operate on either flank, has played eight matches so far and has found the back of the net six times and has also assisted four goals.
Measuring at 5"ft 9', Sam has been compared to the likes of Arjen Robben due to his explosive pace and dribbling style and because of the way the Nigerian-born German exploits the right flank.
Sam is blessed with amazing dribbling skills. His quick movement is very easy on the eye and he likes to cut inside the box. He is not afraid of taking long shots and certainly has the confidence to do so. His passing is also good and he doesn't give possession away easily.
The areas where Sam could still improve would be to work a little harder at defending for the team.
Still fast, strong and with an eye for goal, Sam is also consistent - something which eluded him at the start of his career.
The 25-year-old attacking midfielder must continue this good form throughout the course of the season and do justice to the hype which is beginning to grow around him.
