Daniel Agger's penalty brace not enough for Denmark

Daniel Agger grabbed a penalty brace last night but Denmark missed out on a World Cup play-off spot.

The Liverpool star struck twice from the penalty spot during his country's 6-0 World Cup qualification win over Malta.

The result guaranteed the Danes second place in Group B, but the nation had the worst record out of the nine teams.

Arsenal's Niklas Bendtner failed to find the net however, after scoring two in Friday's 2-2 draw against table toppers Italy.

Agger, who had been linked with a move to Spanish giants Barcelona recently, has 10 internationals goals in his 59 caps, since making his debut in 2005.

Denmark will be hoping to climb the new FIFA rankings this week in a bid to claim an easier group draw in the future.

Agger returns to Premier League action this weekend as his Liverpool side face a tricky trip to St. James Park to face Newcastle.

With Arsenal only ahead of the Merseyside club on goal difference at the top of the table, Agger and his teammates will be looking to over take their rivals and continue their fantastic start to the season.
