Manchester United face competition for Real Madrid star

Manchester United face a three-way battle with French giants Monaco and Serie A champions Juventus for the signing of Fabio Coentrao, according to Spanish sources picked up by the Daily Star.

25-year-old Coentrao, who joined current club Real Madrid from Portuguese outfit Benfica during the summer of 2011, has largely struggled to cement a first-team place at the Santiago Bernabeu and was widely linked with a move away from the club during the summer.

He reportedly came very close to joining compatriot Nani at Manchester United on a particularly hectic transfer deadline day, but a potential loan move ultimately failed after Real's attempts to secure an adequate replacement did not prove successful.

Despite the disappointment of losing out on one of his primary targets, however, under-pressure United boss David Moyes is rumoured to be interested in revisiting a deal for Coentrao when the window re-opens for business in January.

But, according to those aforementioned Spanish sources picked up by the Daily Star, they will face an intense battle for the Portugal international's signature and both Monaco and Juve are reportedly considering making a move for Coentrao in the new year.

A new left-back would appear to be of top priority for Moyes, who has been widely lambasted after enduring a somewhat uncertain start to life in the Old Trafford dugout.

Despite possessing one of Europe's best in the shape of experienced Frenchman Patrice Evra, Moyes coveted the services of Everton and England full-back Leighton Baines during the summer in addition to Coentrao.
