The Daily Telegraph reports that former England captain John Terry has found himself alongside current England stars Wayne Rooney and Leighton Baines in the Opta Premier League Team of the Season – but looking at stats from, it's difficult to see why.

The Blues skipper has appeared in each of his club's seven league outings this season, and produced performances of notable quality - but does his current form really warrant a place ahead of other star Premier League defenders?

Tottenham Hotspur's Jan Vertonghen has played an integral part in one of the meanest defences in England, shipping only five goals seven matches into the campaign. The Belgian has won eight offsides and completed 14 tackles, way ahead of the Chelsea centre back's five tackles and three offsides.

Likewise, ever-present Manchester City full-back Pablo Zabaleta is shaping up to be his side's most consistent star once again this season, offering accurate delivery from out wide whilst marshalling his right flank with superb reliability.

It was refreshing to see Terry score a vintage headed equaliser against Spurs at White Hart Lane a few weeks back, but the Argentine has bagged two assists and been more clinical in a defensive sense, boasting six-times as many successful tackles with 34.

Of course, the 32-year-old Chelsea man has certainly been a star performer for the Europa League champions, but the statistics claim that other defenders in the Premier League have enjoyed even more fruitful starts to the campaign.

The Premier League Team of the Season is likely to look a whole lot different come May next year – do you think John Terry will rise above his peers and be among the final squad? Leave your thoughts in the comments section.
