Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke could make a return to the side when they face Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, according to BBC Sport.

The burly striker was ruled out for four to six weeks when he injured his hip against Norwich on 21 September.

However, having trained with his national team and been named on the bench for their game against Wales, Villa manager Paul Lambert believes the forward may be fit enough to play.

"He must have been fit enough to go on the bench, or they wouldn't have done that," said Lambert.

And the former Norwich manager confirmed that Benteke himself feels fit:

"He's been in dialogue with our medical people. He's doing well and felt good.

"He was training Sunday and Monday with the national team. We trust Christian to come back and then see how he feels and judge from there."

The big Belgian has been in impressive form already this season, building  what was a confident debut year in the Premier League.

Benteke is Villa's leading scorer this season with five goals - including two at the Emirates in the Villans' 3-1 defeat of table-topping Arsenal.

The striker had requested a transfer in the summer, only to later withdraw the request.

Speculation continues to link the 22-year-old with a move away from Villa Park and it remains to be seen if anyone will approach the talented forward in January.
