Even the most ardent United fan cannot deny that David Moyes' side have had an abysmal start to their campaign.
Currently sitting behind Hull in the table, they have lost three of their first seven premier league matches.
Of course, there is the argument that they have had the toughest games out of any big club to play so far - having to play Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in their first few games - but when they lost at Old Trafford to West Brom a few weeks back, there were no excuses left.
Many now have written the Red Devils off for this season. After all, could anyone expect a post-Feguson United to get off to anything but a very bumpy start?
Things looked bad even before the season began with an embarrassing transfer window where David Moyes failed to grab any of his main targets except for the mangled purchase of Marouane Fellaini in which Moyes ended up paying millions more than necessary for the Everton midfielder.
However, what will prove to be the new manager's biggest achievement so far was to somehow manage to persuade Rooney to remain in Manchester, something that even Sir Alex struggled to do.
Rooney has been in inspired form recently for both club and country.
He was the only good thing about United in their recent crushing derby against Man City and was similarly the only positive to take away from their home defeat to the Baggies.
More recently, even though Andros Townsend has been grabbing all the headlines for England (and deservedly so), there has been another story which is that Wayne Rooney has returned to his brilliant best.
The striker has been England's top scorer throughout qualifying, with two of his seven goals coming in the last two and most important games.
If Moyes can harness Rooney's potential in the way that Ferguson did with the precocious 18 year-old, then he will be able to reanimate the former unstoppable juggernaut that was Manchester United and soon this terrible beginning will be forgotten about.
