Southampton face a significant injury concern after Polish goalkeeper Artur Boruc was ruled out of his national side's fixture with England on Tuesday.
Boruc, 33, has been in imperious form for the Saints, keeping five clean sheets in the opening seven games of the season - conceding just two goals.
Southampton sit fourth in the Premier League ahead of their trip to a struggling Manchester United this weekend, who are still coming to terms with life post-Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Red Devils occupy ninth place in the table and find themselves six points adrift of both Arsenal and Liverpool, but just three points behind Lancashire rivals Manchester City.
United have endured a stuttering start to the 2013/14 season, having slumped to defeat against West Bromwich Albion and Liverpool, as well as becoming the victims of a 4-1 defeat by Manuel Pellegrini's new charges in the blue half of Manchester.
Southampton meanwhile have emerged as early dark horses, with Mauricio Pochettino's management overseeing a huge transition at the club.
At this time last season, the Saints had conceded 20 goals and found themselves deeply embedded in the early basement scrap.
The former PSG defender has ensured that history does not repeat itself, with his side currently holding the best defensive record in England, having conceded just two goals in his sides seven Premier League games to-date.
Only AS Roma of Serie A have a better defensive record throughout Europe, a statistic which is testament to the work of Pochettino and his backroom staff.
The summer arrivals of Dejan Lovren and Victor Wanyama have inevitably contributed, but Artur Boruc's presence is not to be underestimated.
Nomination for the Barclays' Player of the Month for the month of September demonstrated the great contribution Boruc has made to Southampton's impressive early season form.
So the news on Tuesday evening that Artur Boruc had encountered a thigh problem during the warm-up at Wembley Stadium will prove most unwelcome for the Saints' Argentine boss.
Boruc posted a picture on his Instagram account, showing his right thigh undergoing treatment, corroborating earlier stories in the Polish media.
Boruc was forced to take a place on the bench, having been widely expected to start in goal for the Polish opposition in England's crunch qualifier tie. Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny deputised in his absence.
Southampton Football Club have at current released no comment on Boruc's statement.
