Josh Freeman has been officially announced as the starter against the New York Giants on Monday night, reports ESPN.
The former first round pick was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after losing his starting job to rookie Mike Glennon.
Freeman spent four years in Tampa Bay, three as the starting quarterback, but after a disappointing start to the 2013 season the Buccaneers decided to cut ties.
The Minnesota Vikings were a surprising landing spot for the 25-year-old as they already had 2011 first round pick Christian Ponder and veteran Matt Cassel on the roster.
The Vikings apparently felt they needed another option at the position and clearly were waiting for the opportunity to start Freeman.
This could signal the end of the Christian Ponder era in Minnesota. Matt Cassel was clearly a stop gap option but the Vikings hoped Ponder would turn into a franchise calibre player in 2013.
But Ponder regressed as the Vikings started 0-3 and he suffered a rib injury during a loss to the Browns.
Whilst Freeman is not exactly a substantial upgrade the hope is that he can return to his 2010 form and provide a spark to a Vikings team that looks set to miss the play-offs.
The logic behind the move is understandable as it’s obvious that neither Ponder nor Cassel is able to overcome the deficiencies that have become apparent with the Vikings roster.
Freeman is clearly the most talented of the three, but his work ethic and leadership were called into question in Tampa Bay.
Sometimes one man’s trash is another man’s treasure but this move appears more out of desperation than anything.
Freeman has a second opportunity to prove he is a starting quarterback and he isn't exactly short of help. Last year’s MVP Adrian Peterson is in the backfield and he has weapons receiver in Greg Jennings and tight end Kyle Rudolph.
However, Freeman had an equally impressive cast in Tampa Bay but maybe a fresh start will give Freeman new motivation; the Vikings are banking on it.
Freeman will get to face an awful Giants defense on Monday night; his road to redemption could start here.
