Newcastle skipper to miss Liverpool clash

Published Add your comment

Newcastle will be without talismanic captain Fabricio Coloccini for their weekend clash with Premier League rivals Liverpool.

The Argentine defender picked up an injury while on international duty and it's not yet known how long he'll be out for.

The Magpies welcome Liverpool to St James' Park Saturday lunch time knowing a win would take them into the top half of the table.

Asked about the international break, manager Alan Pardew said: "We have had an injury to Colo in that time, so he won't feature this weekend.

"How long he misses, we will have to wait and see, so that was disappointing.

"He has a groin injury, so we will have to see how it repairs itself over the next few days."

To add insult to literal injury, Coloccini failed to even take to the field for his country, being an unused substitute in the 3-1 victory over Peru before missing out all together for the 3-2 defeat at the hands of Uruguay.

The mop-haired defender is into his sixth season with the Toon and will hope a successful season can earn him a place in the Argentina squad for next summer's World Cup.

Colocinni had previously expressed a desire to leave Newcastle to return to is homeland but home sickness won't be an issue in 2014 with the World Cup taking place in near-by Brazil.
