Andy Murray was poised to receive an Office of the Order of the British Empire medal from Prince William at Buckingham Palace, but his moment of glory was stalled by a random drug test, according to The Telegraph.

The 2013 Wimbledon champion very nearly stood up the royal family after the substance authorities arrived at his doorstep at the most inopportune moment of the morning.

As a result of the ill-timed investigation, the Scot was late to the illustrious presentation alongside his parents Judy and Willie and girlfriend Kim Sears, despite the best efforts of their highly-skilled cabby.

"They turned up at my door at 8.20am and I had a taxi booked for half past eight. I was a but worried I was going to be late but the taxi did a great job in getting us here," Murray explained.

"It's part of the job but when you have a day like today you are looking forward to, it's the last thing you need."

Murray played it cool upon arrival to the event and the royals appeared equally lenient about the mishap as the tennis star shared a few friendly jokes with the Duke of Cambridge about the unfortunate occurrence – including a cheeky dig at the Prince's messy handwriting.

"I teased him a bit as he had sent a note to me before Wimbledon wishing me luck and his wife had written me a letter afterwards. Her handwriting was beautiful and I told him how fantastic it was compared to his."

The 26-year-old received the prestigious medal for his efforts on the ATP Tour including an historic victory at Wimbledon 2013 in addition to his US Open and Olympic gold medal triumph in 2012.
