San Marino closed the curtain on another joyless World Cup qualifying campaign with a crushing 8-0 defeat to Ukraine on Tuesday night to confirm a final goal difference of –53.
Now, no disrespect to them – it's ridiculous to expect a country that has a population of 32,000 to compete against even the least established of European nations.
For a nation of that size, the experience of lining up against Spain, England, Holland and Italy outweighs the importance of victory or qualifying for for the World Cup – at least for now.
Interestingly, San Marino doesn't hold the record for the biggest defeat ever suffered in an official match – in fact they haven't even come close – that accolade firmly belongs to American Samoa, who suffered a grievous 31-0 slaughtering at the hands of Australia in 2001.
But that's about as good as it gets for the smallest UEFA nation in existence, as portrayed by the biggest margins of defeat ever inflicted on La Serenissima. Click on to see the cringeworthy results.
