Rafael Benitez is planning to hijack Liverpool's move for highly-rated Barcelona starlet Martin Montoya, by offering him the chance to join Napoli, according to talkSPORT.
Montoya, who is out of contract with Barca next summer, has been linked with a number of top European clubs, but Liverpool have thus far showed the greatest intent in trying to sign him.
According to reports the 22-year-old is a primary transfer target for Brendan Rodgers, and the Northern Irishman wants to offer him a pre-contract deal in January.
However Napoli boss Benitez, who managed Liverpool for six years between 2004 and 2010, is planning on throwing a spanner in the works but offering Montoya an alternate option.
Rumours are speculating that the Italian side could offer the Barca youngster a £50,000-a-week contract in order to try and convince him to reject Liverpool and opt for the Serie A instead.
Montoya's current deal at the Nou Camp ends in June next year and it's widely expected that his future will be decided in the January transfer window.
