Victor Valdes will leave Barcelona at the end of his current contract, in June 2014.

He stated that he needs a new challenge in his career and the best for him would be a move away from the Nou Camp.

He also said that he would welcome the possibility of playing for French side AS Monaco and that he sees himself fitting perfectly to this environment.

AS Monaco would also welcome this transfer as they attempt to build a top-class squad in order to start dominating Europe.

They have plenty of money and even bigger ambitions and Valdes fits in the plan as he is thought to be a goalkeeper of significant quality. But what is Barcelona’s reaction to this?

Barcelona’s president, Sandro Rosell, expressed the opinion that the club would like to sign a new deal with Valdes and continue his career at the Nou Camp, but the Catalan giants are reportedly making plans for his departure.

They are already making a shortlist of goalkeepers that could replace Valdes, including Thibaut Courtous, who is on loan at Atletico Madrid from Chelsea; Marc Andre ter Stegen of Borussia Mönchengladbach and Liverpool's Pepe Reina, who is on loan at Napoli.

Lately Arsenal were added to the clubs interested in signing Valdes, but he seems determined to sign for the French club no matter what.

I think that Barcelona will profit if this move is confirmed as they would have the chance to replace Valdes, with a reliable goalkeeper who could give the Catalan side the defensive stability which is compromised due to the injuries of both Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique.

This is an excellent opportunity to built a new defensive line from scratch and extend their domination for many years to come.
