Adam Lallana scored in the finals minutes of play to continue Southampton's great start to the season with a 1-1 draw against reigning champions Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Croatian defender Dejan Lovren sent the ball goalwards in the 89th minute after a corner from James Ward-Prowse, with the ball flicking off Lallana and into the back of the net. The Red Devils had earlier made it 1-0 in the 26th minute thanks to Robin van Persie.
The match was quite even from beginning to end. Both teams had their strong moments, but the first real chance was for the hosts. In the 11th minute Nani turned up on the wing, crossed the ball to Van Persie, but his shot was well saved by Artur Boruc.
The tempo was slowed for about 10 minutes and in the 24th minute Pablo Osvaldo had a golden chance to open the scoring.
It was Wayne Rooney who lost the ball under the pressure of Victor Wanyama. He passed the ball to Lallana, who found Osvaldo up-front, but the Italian's shot didn't have enough power and David de Gea saved with ease. A minute later the Saints were a goal down.
Rooney was again in the mix as his powerful shot was saved by Artur Boruc, but RvP was in the right place at the right time and he made it 1-0 on the rebound.
In the next minute United came close to a second goal. Phil Jones found Nani, and the Portuguese winger crossed the ball to Rooney, whose shot went off the bar.
And then again the tempo was slowed down and nothing interesting happened to the end of the first half.
The spectators had to wait until the 66th minute for something a bit more interesting. The Red Devils won a corner. Rooney took it and found Van Persie, but his brilliant header hit the bar.
A few moments later Boruc made a great save, stopping Nani's powerful effort.
In the 68th minute Adnan Januzaj tried his luck with a 30 yard thumping effort. This would have been a contender for goal of the season, but Boruc made a fantastic save to stop the shot of the young winger.
But United thought the victory was theirs and this gave the Saints a chance in the final 10 minutes, and in the 89th minute their efforts were rewarded. A corner taken from James Ward-Prowse found Lovren, who bundled the ball into United's net off Lallana.
Late into added time Adam Lallana tried to make it 2-1, but his shot from the edge of the box was saved by de Gea.
A few moments later the final whistle was blown, ending the game at a 1-1 draw.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Artur Boruc (Southampton): A lot of players impressed during the game, but the Polish goalkeeper gets the nod for his two incredible saves when United were close to making it 2-0 midway through the second period.
